Very straightforward

This book looks at Appalachian customs and beliefs, something I've been interested in ever since I realized that my Grandmother had some odd habits that I could never figure out. Reading this book, I actually understand where some of these things came from. Very useful and fun, but the large font-size and spacing makes it fairly light on content.

Although the book is small, it is full of interesting facts. It lives up to its title. I'm from Appalachia myself, and I learned a thing or two. I highly recommend it, if you intend to use it or just have a bit of curiosity. Very nice.

Just like being home!

My partner and I live in Boise, Idaho. He has never quite understood some of the "quirks" of the things I do or say. I was born and raised in the Blue Ridge, and I got him this book as part of a gift. This book does a great job of giving all of the great stuff my Granny tried to get me to understand.

About the Author
SUSAN HILL has been a professional writer for over fifty years. Her books have won awards and prizes including the Whitbread, the John Llewellyn Rhys and the Somerset Maugham; and have been shortlisted for the Booker. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Honours. Her novels include Strange Meeting, I'm the King of the Castle and A Kind Man. She has also published autobiographical works and collections of short stories as well as the Simon Serrailler series of crime novels. The play of her ghost story The Woman in Black has been running in London's West End since 1988. She is married with two adult daughters and lives in North Norfolk.

EXCELLENT ghost story

No neat and tidy endings here, folks. Just strap yourselves in for a great ghost story, complete with nighttime hauntings galore. This is one of those stores that might keep you up at night, just envisioning everything again and again. The author does a great job of making the reader feel like he or she is there with this young attorney - suffering through the whole thing.

Enjoy! I'm now looking forward to the movie next year - shame they couldn't have released it around Halloween...

Absolutely Terrifying

I first saw this as a Broadway play, and it has been to this date the only theatre piece that gave me nightmares. I could not wait to read the novel, and just as the play was, it scared me senseless.
The novel plays heavily on atmosphere and mood. Susan Hill brings the black moors surrounding the Eel Marsh Hosue to life with vivid imagery. It's a "beautiful" setting for the frightening ghost that lives there. The characters are incredibly realistic and interesting to follow. You feel for Arthur Kipps in his trials and tribulations dealing with the Woman in Black in Eeel Marsh House. All in all, a wonderful ghost story that seems as if it should've been written by Jane Austen.

The evil dead

Susan Hill's 1983 novella has been so successful as to have been made into a television movie and a long-running play, but it works best in its original form as a perfectly-sized long story about a solicitor trying to learn the truth about a specter associated with an abandoned manor house on the flat moor country of East Anglia. The tale is set during the Edwardian period (the heyday of the English ghost story) and comes with all the appurtenances one would expect of a great English ghost story: a frame narrative, a mysterious haunting figure, an uncomprehending narrator invested in scientific positivist explanations for everything, terrified townsfolk who refuse to explain anything to the protagonist (unfortunately, no good explanation of this is ever given: couldn't they have just told him the back story?), and above all tremendous atmosphere. The current edition of the book, from David R. Godine, is beautiful, but perhaps exorbitantly priced for a novella--though the discount amazon provides helps matters greatly.

About the Author

Mariya Stefanova is a founding partner of Private Equity Accounting Insights (PEAI), a private equity training and consultancy firm, providing specialist training and technical advice to GPs, LPs, and fund administrators. She has more than eleven years of experience in private equity accounting and investor reporting and more than seven years of experience in training, during which period she has trained over a thousand fund accountants and senior executives on the GP, LP, and fund administration side. PEAI Group is also providing specialist PE publications such as the PEAI Private Equity Technical Journal.  Mariya is also the author of the bestseller Private Equity Accounting: The Global Guide (https://www.privateequityinternational.com/peaccounting/), published by PEI Media in October 2011.
     Previously, Mariya worked in the technical department of Augentius Fund Administration LLP, a premium provider of fund administration services specialized in private equity and real estate funds. I could not put this important thriller-like book down. Hall takes you "Inside ISIS" with real heartbreaking stories of victims ISIS leaves in their wake and ISIS defectors who escaped with their lives. You are right there with Hall as he runs through enemy gun fire to bring first hand stories to the reader. After reading "Inside ISIS," I now have a full understanding of the perfect storm that allowed their evolution. A must read for everyone! Get to know our enemy.

An In Depth Look at a Very Real and Frightening Group of Murderers

There are a lot of books about ISIS out there right now, and it's hard to digest all of the information currently circulating in the news. This author has experience getting to the point as a columnist, so this book gets right to the meat and potatoes of the issue. It's so very sad to hear about the people who have willingly join this sect of savages thinking that it is a path to a meaningful life. It's not long before they realize that it's just a group of misguided murderers with loyalty to no-one but themselves. The stories of victims who escaped or survived, and their family members are harrowing. Hall did a great job of seeing this issue and the effects of this group from multiple perspectives.

About the Author
Chris Barker is a teacher and researcher with over 25 years experience. He has worked in a number of schools and universities in both England and Australia. He is currently Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia. Chris is the author of six previous books that are linked together by an interest in culture, meaning and communication. At present he is exploring questions of emotion in contemporary cultural life.


Emma A. Jane is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of the Arts and Media at the University of New South Wales, Australia. She is currently involved in two major research projects: one on gendered cyberhate, and another on the ethics of cognitive enhancement or ‘smart drugs’. Prior to commencing her academic career, Emma spent nearly 25 years working in the Australian print, electronic, and on-line media. She has written seven previous books including a novel, Deadset, which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Asia and the South Pacific for Best First Novel in 1997.

A great illustrator, and a pretty decent writer

Often we are discouraged from finding out too much about our heroes and icons, lest we be disappointed with what we find. Rockwell, however, shines as one who is thoroughly interesting, although different from what one might imagine in his memoir/autobiography.

I suppose one might expect the celebrated illustrator (he was careful to always distinguish himself as an illustrator and not an artist) to something above the fray, laughing at the foibles of the human condition. Here we find that Rockwell was just as neurotic, and full of fancy as any of his subjects. His life, however, wasn't always a Rockwell painting. After a very unsuccessful first marriage, Rockwell found love in the arms of his second wife.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is when Rockwell takes us through a Saturday Evening Post cover from concept to painting. You couldn't imagine all the second guessing Rockwell did, even after the painting was done.

If you're more than just a casual Rockwell fan, you must read this. You may be stripped of a few illusions, but you will definitely appreciate the personality behind the brush.

Norman Rockwell Rocks!

Following that somewhat irreverent title, I want to say I have nothing but respect for this man. He is truly an American icon. I had a paperback version of his life way back in the '70s and found it delightful (as the man, himself, must have been). Fast forward to 2009 and a trip to the Detroit Institute of Art where a huge body of his work was on display for several months. As I toured the exhibit, I recalled the honest and endearing words from that long ago paperback and realized that I wanted to read them again. "Adventures of a Illustrator" arrived and I was amazed. I now have a beautiful book on my coffee table that is filled, not only with his life story, told with humor and humility, but a generous number of illustrations; early and late, color and black and white. including all of his POST covers. Anyone who has admired this man's work over the years, from his story-filled Saturday Evening Post covers to his sensitive Freedom posters and presidential portraits, will enjoy learning the life story behind this gentle man's work.

My Adventures As an Illustrator Review

This is a wonderful book about the life of Norman Rockwell as only he could have written. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and I have recommended it to all my friends. It gives you an understanding of his life and his discriptions of all the characters in his life are really fun. I have never read a book with such fun descriptions. He went through a lot of phases in his life and moved whenever he found he was lacking of ideas. If you like Norman Rockwell paintings, this book will help you enjoy the painting even more. What can I say - This book is really fun!!
