For a group of short stories written over a period of several years for unrelated reasons, "The Crawling Abattoir" wouldn't seem a like candidate to have a theme, but it does: the hilarity of horror. The funny side of agony. Hit me with your torture-shtick!
From the desperation of a lonely necrophile deeply frustrated by unrequited corpse-love; to a really rotten clown's long drawn-out discovery that success comes only after paying his dues in multiple broken bones, lacerated kidneys, lots and lots of blood and more; and to the horrible, horrible, (really horrible) misfortunes of Little Timmy, an innocent youngster badly mistreated by the world for no very good reason other than the reader's enjoyment; this collection will jam a rusty icepick all the way through your funny-bone, and you'll laugh until you cry through months of expensive, excruciating elbow rehabilitation. Enjoy!
“Martin Mundt is a nasty, warped, zero-temperature so-and-so who can’t put two words together without first snickering, then slitting their throats. No wonder reading him is such a pleasure.” -- Peter Straub

Wonderful original horror, well told!
By Amazon Customer
On a scale of "horrific" to "hilarious", this book turns the scale into a Möbius strip. Sweet dark confectionary; this book was great! Every story was well constructed, creepy, and probably funny as hell, if you are significantly bent. (Dear Abby letters from a necrophiliac? Guy pulls half his teeth out, at once, on purpose, and it's the best decision open to him? Sentient skin tags? Awesome).
Really, I will be tracking down everything else Martin Mundt has written. These are a very, very well crafted short stories. A few complaints about a few of the stories, but nothing even remotely close to spoiling the joy of any of them. Buy this book. You know you want it.

Disappointing collection
By Books Lovers Never Go to Bed Alone
Originally released some time ago, Martin Mundt's The Crawling Abattoir has been released again with a new cover and a few updates. It's a collection of short stories loosely tied together under the banner of humorous horror. The collection is definitely odd. From the opening story about a desperate necrophile seeking love in all the wrong places to Pogo references, the stories run the gamut of bizarre.
Perhaps it's me, but this collection seemed far less humorous and far more gross in a twelve year old boy sort of way. The jokes about Leslie the hermaphrodite just don't come across the same way now as they might have a decade or so ago. Chuckling over a nail gun attack, bowel jokes after reincarnation, tanning beds and the Kevin Bacon references gave the stories a dated, tired feel. Slappo the clown and slaves of the Manic Worm tipped into silly rather than the haunting suspense and Gothic horror that I favor.
Some of the stories did have an interesting angle. "Emptiness, Shaped like a Man" dealt with a shapeshifting being of sorts. Able to become anyone, the being shifts from body to body and changes the course of each individual's life permanently. Mundt's prose also has moments of eloquence with phrases like "into the shadows of entropy" that lure you in seductively. The problem is that there are not enough of those moments throughout to keep the stories focused.
Mundt has a very particular style of writing and the key to his success with readers is locking into that style. I did not. Humor and horror don't mix well for me and these stories are definitely in that category. The humor is dark and comes with a razor's edge. For those who appreciate that style of horror writing, Mundt will succeed. If you are looking for more complex, psychological horror, he doesn't come through.

funny horror is a hit
By H. Casper
Mundt is scary. And funny. If you enjoy Jeff Strand's humorous horror then Mundt is for you. You can't be too squeamish though or you may get grossed out.
