Oxford Mini Dictionary

I've sought out several pocket-sized dictionaries recently and this one seems to be the best of the bunch. With the other dictionaries, there were more missing words(and some were relatively common too).

One thing I liked about this dictionary is that the definitions are simple to understand without any fancy vocabulary; with some other dictionaries, the definition contains words that you need to look up in order to understand.

Another nice thing about this dictionary is that there is a small box under certain words(after the definition) which gives further clarification as to its usage(i.e., whether the word could be "offensive" or a common mistake with spelling, etc.).

Granted this is a pocket dictionary and will not contain all the vocabulary of a full-sized one, but it still lacked a few words that aren't too uncommon(but as I've said earlier, not as bad as the other brands).

And the binding on this dictionary feels a bit shabby. But overall this is still a solid choice among pocket/mini dictionaries and of course the "Oxford" name is renowned in the world of dictionaries.

Sturdy and perfectly sized dictionary from the " gold standard" of dictionary publishers. Personally, I'd much rather have the 22 (or so) volume complete unabridged OED, but it's a horror to lift, plus you'd need a small trailer attached to a John Deere tractor to take it with you, thus confirming your status as the neighborhood lunatic.

Security Unbound demonstrates that governing through suspicion poses serious challenges to democratic practice. Some of these challenges are familiar, such as the erosion of the right to privacy; others are less so, such as the post-human challenge to citizenship.

Business people can sometimes be funny if they try

Classier comedy writers like Gene Perret and Robert Orben have tried to help business people and public speakers over the past 20 years or more. If you make money with it, it is usually called "professional speaking," and there are a lot more speakers around than there are comedians. Also, the comedy in the clubs took on an angry tone, with more sex and toilet jokes than necessary. So, "OH, THAT'S WHAT YOU WRITE" could easily be surmised if people call themselves comedy writers...Business speakers can use help in being funny, and the second part of the book gives lists of jokes that may go over or may not, depending on the strength of your delivery. So, be sure to read the "Tips on Delivery" chapter. "Pitfalls of Humor" chapter makes some good points also. A comedian has more freedom to say what he pleases since if we like him, he is accepted as a buffoon from beginning to end. Good old classic

Reading this was at first a little slow but once you understood the style it was good reading. The writer gave you want great picture of life in cossack village and their freedoms.

pluses and minuses

Tolstoy's story is wonderful; descriptions exacting and intense; connections to emotion amazing. I worked almost three years in the Republic of Georgia, and the experiences of Dmetri Olenin remind me, in many ways, of my own in the Caucuses. Just as Tolstoy and Olenin, I was struck by the natural beauty and granduer of the mountains and countryside; the beauty, complexity and zest for life of the people. The Caucasus, however, is also a land of contradictions: beauty and ugliness, simplicity and complexity. Tolstoy experienced it and was able to put his experiences to paper beautifully. The excellent illustrations add to one's enjoyment of the text. I give the story and the illustrations FIVE STARS.
The translation, on the other hand, seems lacking and poor in many instances. I have little doubt that a better more precise translation would create a greater, more accurate understanding of Tolstoy's story and meaning. It appears that the translators sat down with a Russian-English dictionary and used the first word they encountered to use, without consideration of the flavor, mood, or setting of the text and culture Tolstoy is writing about. That is why I give this particular edition three stars.

Fairly good short work by Tolstoy

I'm a great fan of "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". This Tolstoy story is much shorter, and while good, is a little less interesting. The book mostly focuses on the simple story and gives less insight into the Cossack and Chechen cultures that I had hoped. The story seems to reflect the reports that Tolstoy had a desire to personally live among the "common" people.

About the Author
Casey Jones was born and raised in Maryland, but moved to New York to find a publisher for his book, 'All Fall Down'. With the help of some extraordinarily talented folks (and a successful Kickstarter project), that book became a reality.

He wrote 'All Fall Down' as a response to the death of a friend's sister. (The book is dedicated to her.) Having shared in an experience of such potent loss, Casey wrote his story in a medium where such things traditionally *don't* happen: Superheroes come back from the dead. They regain their lost powers. This isn't so with 'All Fall Down'.

In the course of writing the comic, Casey was surprised and encouraged by how many people took a shine to the idea-- of superheroes dealing with tragedy as ordinary people. That support made the book possible. He's begun brainstorming on his next comic book miniseries; something lighter this time. He swears.
