About the Author
Chris Barker is a teacher and researcher with over 25 years experience. He has worked in a number of schools and universities in both England and Australia. He is currently Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia. Chris is the author of six previous books that are linked together by an interest in culture, meaning and communication. At present he is exploring questions of emotion in contemporary cultural life.


Emma A. Jane is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of the Arts and Media at the University of New South Wales, Australia. She is currently involved in two major research projects: one on gendered cyberhate, and another on the ethics of cognitive enhancement or ‘smart drugs’. Prior to commencing her academic career, Emma spent nearly 25 years working in the Australian print, electronic, and on-line media. She has written seven previous books including a novel, Deadset, which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Asia and the South Pacific for Best First Novel in 1997.

A great illustrator, and a pretty decent writer

Often we are discouraged from finding out too much about our heroes and icons, lest we be disappointed with what we find. Rockwell, however, shines as one who is thoroughly interesting, although different from what one might imagine in his memoir/autobiography.

I suppose one might expect the celebrated illustrator (he was careful to always distinguish himself as an illustrator and not an artist) to something above the fray, laughing at the foibles of the human condition. Here we find that Rockwell was just as neurotic, and full of fancy as any of his subjects. His life, however, wasn't always a Rockwell painting. After a very unsuccessful first marriage, Rockwell found love in the arms of his second wife.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is when Rockwell takes us through a Saturday Evening Post cover from concept to painting. You couldn't imagine all the second guessing Rockwell did, even after the painting was done.

If you're more than just a casual Rockwell fan, you must read this. You may be stripped of a few illusions, but you will definitely appreciate the personality behind the brush.

Norman Rockwell Rocks!

Following that somewhat irreverent title, I want to say I have nothing but respect for this man. He is truly an American icon. I had a paperback version of his life way back in the '70s and found it delightful (as the man, himself, must have been). Fast forward to 2009 and a trip to the Detroit Institute of Art where a huge body of his work was on display for several months. As I toured the exhibit, I recalled the honest and endearing words from that long ago paperback and realized that I wanted to read them again. "Adventures of a Illustrator" arrived and I was amazed. I now have a beautiful book on my coffee table that is filled, not only with his life story, told with humor and humility, but a generous number of illustrations; early and late, color and black and white. including all of his POST covers. Anyone who has admired this man's work over the years, from his story-filled Saturday Evening Post covers to his sensitive Freedom posters and presidential portraits, will enjoy learning the life story behind this gentle man's work.

My Adventures As an Illustrator Review

This is a wonderful book about the life of Norman Rockwell as only he could have written. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and I have recommended it to all my friends. It gives you an understanding of his life and his discriptions of all the characters in his life are really fun. I have never read a book with such fun descriptions. He went through a lot of phases in his life and moved whenever he found he was lacking of ideas. If you like Norman Rockwell paintings, this book will help you enjoy the painting even more. What can I say - This book is really fun!!

While many of its photographs have been widely published, until now no one has examined the Magnum archive itself. In Reading Magnum, experts from several fields investigate this visual archive, now residing at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, to discover how a select, influential group of visual authors has used the camera for an ambitious project of cultural interpretation and social commentary.

The chapters in Reading Magnum are devoted to themes generated by a close reading of the archive—war and conflict, portraiture, geography, cultural life, social relations, and globalization. These themes are further developed by evocative portfolios of images, which suggest something of the depth and range of the photo agency, and by tracing the trajectory of several iconic images from annotated press print to distribution to eventual publication. Volume editor Steven Hoelscher provides an overview of the Magnum enterprise, and Alison Nordström offers an appreciation of the Magnum archive as a material record of information about the making and disseminating of photographs that is being lost as images on paper are replaced by images on screen. As a whole, the book's unique reading of the Magnum archive reveals patterns of intention, aesthetic vision, and political perspective that become legible only by viewing both the physical objects and the recorded images that constitute this remarkable collection.

About the Author
Steven Hoelscher is Professor of American Studies and Geography at the University of Texas at Austin. He regularly teaches graduate seminars on the history of photography at the Harry Ransom Center, where he is Academic Curator of Photography. Hoelscher’s books include Picturing Indians: Photographic Encounters and Tourist Fantasies in H. H. Bennett’s Wisconsin Dells; Textures of Place: Exploring Humanist Geographies; and Heritage on Stage: The Invention of Ethnic Place in America’s Little Switzerland.

Extraordinary Visions

This book provides a fascinating glimpse of world events over the past 70 years, seen through the eyes of some of the greatest photographers of this time. The images themselves are arresting. They combine artistry with a rare degree of journalistic sensitivity and are accompanied by fascinating essays addressing the social role of photography and how place images in the media have shaped our views of the world. The book also looks behind the scenes of photography as a business--how photos were selected, cropped, and printed back when they were material objects, and how these objects circulated between the Magnum Photo cooperative and the people who paid to reprint the images. As the photo industry has shifted to digital capture, editing, and delivery, and these old business practices are abandoned, the technical information alone would make this book worth possessing. But hours can be spent just looking at the pictures as well.

I love this book, but

I wish the UT Press had done a better job of making it. I had to send the first copy back and the second has almost the same flaw. The hard cover corners are bent, the back bottom one quite severely.

Although this is an "archive" of a gazillion images with eight thoughtful essays, I can't wait until I've actually read it cover to cover.

The book is a treasure.

Another wonderful book from Magnum!

I own several books of Magnum photos and they're all a treasure, but this one is really special. The photos span many years and they're quite varied, with some that are really affecting and some that are true works of art. I think Magnum photographers are a "gift" to the photography world and I never tire of looking at these photos.

Fun glimpse into prohibition entertaining

A literal reprint (or copy) of the original text and images from 1930. Written in a very funny and entertaining way, it gives insight in to life during prohibition - and it's fascinating. The facts that drinks were pared down to simple combinations due to the limited availability of spirits/non-alcoholic spirits, and that some strong flavors were required to cover up the taste of the bootleg booze hadn't occurred to me until reading this book. Fun descriptions, quips, and illustrations!

I love vintage recipes and this is a total gem. The writing is quirky and funny and the illustrations are charming. The quality isn't amazing, it's clearly just photocopied but I don't care, it's worth it that this book lives on in whatever format it can.

Too adorable

I own many of the Bolton cocktail 'how-to' facsimiles from this era. This one is a total scream. See "What'll You Have" or "Jerry Thomas' Bartender" for more actual recipes; stick to this one for the comedy and 'advice'. From the amusing typos, colorful descriptions, and less than appetizing finger sandwiches (You mean faux chicken liver pate on rye doesn't sound good right before you drink 3 quarts of port punch?) this title is a treasure. Some of the drinks recipes from this era will make your liver ache merely reading about them. But hey, bathtub gin is an acquired taste. Lots of fun hangover cures and just how to behave around your guests. If you're off to the theatrre (sic) it's important to know what drinks to prepare to aid your good time. Since I like gin and whisky, I managed to find several concoctions that were down right yummy. But if you don't drink gin, whisky or brandy -- the popular alcohol of the day-- you may not find much here other than laughs.

Shun-Qing Shen is a Professor at the Department of Physics, the University of Hong Kong, China.

About the Author
Professor Shun-Qing Shen, an expert in the field of condensed matter physics, is distinguished for his research works on spintronics of semiconductors, quantum magnetism and orbital physics in transition metal oxides, and novel quantum states of condensed matters. He proposed the theory of  topological Anderson insulator, spin transverse force, resonant spin Hall effect and the theory of phase separation in colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) materials. He proved the existence of antiferromagnetic long-range order and off-diagonal long-range order in itinerant electron systems.

Professor Shun-Qing Shen has been a professor of physics at The University of Hong Kong since July 2007. Professor Shen received his BS, MS, and PhD in theoretical physics from Fudan University in Shanghai. He was a postdoctorial fellow (1992 – 1995) in China Center of Advanced Science and Technology (CCAST), Beijing, Alexander von Humboldt fellow (1995 – 1997) in Max Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden, Germany, and JSPS research fellow (1997) in Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. In December 1997 he joined Department of Physics, The University of Hong Kong. He was awarded Croucher Senior Research Fellowship (Croucher Prize) in 2010.

The book is good from a mathematical standpoint

The book is good from a mathematical standpoint. However, the terminology used is far from clear and some equations come out from nowhere. There are few mistakes in the equations and the physical explanations behind topological insulators are forgotten throughout a vast quantity of equations - however, this may be a reflex of some difficulty of the author to express himself in English. The lack of examples is another major shortcoming from a pedagogical point of view.

simple and clear books

I really love this book. The derivation in this work is not difficult to understand. As an experimentalist, I can derive every formula in the book. I have a much deeper understanding on TI now. Strongly recommend to scientists who are not familiar with QFT.
